Abstract
Many modern industrial processes rely for their operation upon the charged ions which are created when a high electric field is applied to a gas. Examples of such devices are the electrostatic precipitators used to remove dust from power station flue gases, cyclone separators, electrostatic scrubbers and granular bed filters. Other systems, for example high voltage DC power cables, create ions as an unwanted byproduct of their operation. These ions then migrate to earth and the resulting current causes significant loss of energy during transmission. (A summary of further examples of the industrial applications of electrostatic phenomena is given in Cross (1987).)
