Left ventricular shape changes and modelling during acute myocardial infarction

Abstract

During acute transmural ischemia the ipoxic myocardium, unable to develop adequate pressure, undergoes a process of passive stretching secondary to the contraction of the nonischemic muscle [1]. Concomitantly, the opposing non-ischemic myocardium demonstrates an increase in wall thickening or shortening [2–3]. The combined effect of these different regional and global deformations would be to alter the shape of the left ventricle (Figure 1).
