Abstract
Observations of fragmentations are discussed, with a view towards star forming molecular clouds. After a brief outline of the motivation and the methods, we give a quick guide to the literature on the subject. We mention molecular line studies, dust continuum studies, and the impact of recent near-infrared images of embedded star clusters. We conclude with some remarks on how the observed clump mass spectrum in molecular clouds may relate to the mass spectrum of stars that form from these clumps.
