Abstract

Since prehistoric times, man populates the deltas and estuarine areas of rivers. Ancient cultures often developed in areas such as the Nile delta, the deltas of the Indus and Ganges, of the Hoangho and Yangtsekiang, the deltas of the Song Khoi and the Mekong, the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt system, the Chesapeake Bay-area.
