Abstract

In this note I briefly review work on external noise and pattern selection in the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation under conditions when the system is convectively unstable; and on slugs and confined states in this equation (with a destabilizing cubic term and a stabilizing quintic term) under conditions when the system is subcritical.
