Abstract

The problem of transient patterns is generally addressed. Some general concepts and methods used in the problem of spinodal decomposition are discussed as a framework of reference. The formation of transient patterns in the Fréedericksz transition in nematics is considered using a Ginzburg-Landau formulation of stochastic nematodynamics. The stages of pattern formation are described by the dynamics of a structure factor and the late stages of pattern decay by domain wall dynamics.
