Abstract

The effects of variable levels of Cd supply on the content of total N, nitrate, and actual and potential nitrate reductase activity (NRA) in roots and leaves of young sugar beet plants were investigated. It was found that a low concentration of Cd (10 µmol L−1) stimulated slightly both NRA and nitrate accumulation, whereas high Cd concentrations acted inhibitorily. The same effect of Cd on NRA was confirmed by experiments with excised segments of sugar beet roots and leaves. The results indicated that Cd may affect the assimilation of nitrate and that the action of Cd depends on its concentration.
