Abstract
The paper describes a culture system for programmed nutrient addition, consisting of growth units and computer equipment. Roots hang in a mist of nutrient solution. The composition of this solution is controlled by a computer program. Two regimes of nutrient (nitrate) availability can be applied sequentially: exponential addition and maintenance of the ambient concentration. Exponential addition rates are used in the exponential growth phase; in the linear growth phase the external concentration established during exponential growth is maintained. This sequence of nutrient regimes is assumed to be particularly apt to accomplish steady state nutrition in optimum as well as suboptimum treatments.
