Summary
This paper gives a brief description of a technical specifiation for a Nordic Weather Radar Network which is going to be a fact by the end of 1991.
The specification consists of an estimate of the expected data traffic between the Nordic Countries, and the required capacity as a result of the main nodes.
The regional nets connecting the radars to the main nodes are also described.
The network has user accessible application functions in every connected node. These functions can do a variety of tasks such as extracting information of the data volumes collected by the radars, and producing composite images from images from several radars.
The described network is a very flexible one, and can be integrated into the COST 73 network.
The work is partly funded by The Nordic Council, and has been conducted by a reference group with members from each of the Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden (Iceland is also a nordic country, but has for obvious reasons not participated in the work). The author is the chairman of the reference group.
The network will be named NORDRAD.
