Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 160))

Abstract

The vacuum ultraviolet provides an important new perspective on galaxies containing massive OB stars. We review UV studies of star formation rates and histories, metal abundances, dust, and hot and cool interstellar matter. We also discuss the potential contributions of UV imaging.
