Abstract
The dynamical “window” provides a framework to many of the astrophysical processes discussed at this Workshop, because, especially when large scale phenomena are considered, the long range gravity force plays a quite important role. By describing some recent specific results from two lines of research, I will illustrate the interplay between the properties of various components in galaxies, particularly their overall relative mass distribution, and the observed large scale morphologies. In particular, I will stress the fact that the dynamical behavior of galaxies is considerably different from that of a single collisionless system of stars. Galaxies that exhibit tight normal spiral structure are expected to have relatively light dynamically active disks where the arm structure and evolution is regulated by the amount and distribution of the cold gas component. Ellipticals with slowly decreasing stellar velocity dispersion profiles are expected to possess a sizable but diffuse halo of dark matter.
