Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 160))

Abstract

X-ray observations give us a direct view of galaxian components that would otherwise remain unknown. Such are the end products of stellar evolution, the hot component of the interstellar medium, and phenomena related to nuclear activity. Here a few examples are presented of how the X-ray data can be used to constrain galaxy evolution and structural properties, when used together with data from other observational windows.
