Abstract

The respective roles of theory and measurement are discussed. After an introduction to the common assumptions invoked to obtain theoretical results some of the interactions between theory and experiment are described. Problems do arise when comparisons are made between theory and experiment, often to the ultimate benefit of both sides. Some particular examples are mentioned. The final discussion concludes that there is no real competition between theory and measurement but that they are complementary.
