Abstract
There are several theories and methods to calculate the kinematics of water waves. Most of the theories and methods have been developed for regular waves, like the linear theory, Stokes higher order theories, stream function theory, etc. The stream function theory can also be applied for an irregular surface profile, using the assumption that the profile travel without change of form.
