Abstract

Taking exotic supernova remnants to be principally those objects which are morphologically unusual, the class is shown to mainly consist of remnants which, like the Crab Nebula, have radio and X-ray emission peaking near the center, indicating that they are powered by a central energy source. The group, which includes neutron stars seen as pulsars, is briefly considered. A related category, which appears to combine a Crab-like object with a shell or less well-defined surrounding emission, is also discussed, with particular reference to CTB80. The so-called axisymmetric sources are considered, and it is concluded that there is little evidence to indicate that they should be treated as a separate category. Finally, the linear features variously referred to as jets, hoses and chimneys are discussed. The best studied one, in the Crab Nebula, exhibits outward motion in all directions, and may represent discharge of relativistic fluid from the remnant’s center, although our limited understanding of the phenomenon is emphasized.
