Abstract

It has been established that five areas of major remote sensing applications in national development which have, hitherto, not been seriously utilised in the planning process of most third world countries are in activities relating to agriculture, urban development, pollution control, weather prediction and natural resources management. In Nigeria, which is a microcosym of most third world or developing countries especially in West Africa, the last 28 years as an independent nation have shown that more problems have been created (perhaps inadvertently) through a myraid of development projects. Studies have shown that some aspects of poor performance may be associated with inadequate data input which could have been better handled if remotely- sensed data (that are now common place) had been available for forward planning at her independence in 1960. The present threat of desertification in the Sudan-Sahel belts of the country has reached an alarming stage which calls for more than tree-planting, no matter how vigorously and seriously this approach has been handled. In this paper, the advantages of remote sensing techniques in studying drought and problems of geo-environmental degradation in relation to desertification trends as confirmed by groundtruth observations in the country are presented. The microwave techniques in monitoring declining vegetal cover is the key to the success of this approach.
