Abstract

The use of passive microwave imagery from satellites has been investigated much less than visible and infared imagery in support of global rainfall monitoring and forecasting, but, being more physically direct, has highter potential for such applications. This paper reviews the principles and practices of passive microwave rainfall evaluation over seas and oceans, illustrates the range of results which have been obtained, and discusses the potential of this approach for rainfall forecasting over oceans and windward coastal zones.
