Abstract
Lasers have been used for endoscopic hemostasis in gastroenterology (GI) for more than ten years and for GI tumor treatment for at least five years. Still many questions remain about the best techniques, indications, histologic and clinical results, and comparisons with standard treatments (often surgery) and with non-laser endoscopic techniques. Some important questions have been addressed and answered in careful laboratory studies. The purpose of this paper is to relate laboratory studies with lasers and non-laser endoscopic techniques to clinical questions concerning endoscopic control of GI hemorrhage and tumor treatment. Results and techniques will be related to the endoscopic treatment of bleeding peptic ulcers, esophageal varices, angioma, and GI tumors.
