Abstract

We present a novel expression for the complete electron transfer rate matrix in a three level system, which holds for an arbitrary value of the system free energies and reorganization energies. When the intermediate energy level is sufficiently high we recover the conventional superexchange rate. The relative contribution of the superexchange and the sequential mechanisms in the primary electron transfer process in the photosynthetic reaction center is discussed.
