Abstract

The structure of the photosynthetic reaction centre from the purple bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis is described as determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis at 2.3 Ă…resolution. The most prominent feature is the basically symmetric architecture of the structure, which contains two nearly equivalent branches for the electron transfer across the membrane. Possible reasons for the use of only one pigment branch in the electron transfer are discussed.
