Rhizomania

  • Chapter
The Sugar Beet Crop

Part of the book series: World Crop Series ((WOCS))

Abstract

Rhizomania disease has probably attracted more attention in recent years than any other existing or perceived threat to the sugar-beet crop. This may seem surprising, given the relatively small proportion of the crop area so far affected in most countries. However, awareness of its potential to reduce yield severely and to persist almost indefinitely in soil once established, along with the difficulty of preventing its spread under mechanised and irrigated agricultural systems, has generated increasing concern amongst growers and processors alike.
