Abstract
Mumps is an acute fever of childhood caused by a single serotype in the Paramyxovirus genus of the Paramyxoviridae family. Efficient infection occurs by direct contact or through aerosols containing virus and most members of a community will be infected at some stage. Peak incidence of infection is in the 5–9 year age band, but many infections are subclinical (approximately 30%). Immunity is sufficiently durable to prevent reinfection and to dampen the rate of virus spread. The virus is a spherical particle of 150–200 nm with a phospholipid membrane bearing protein spikes (V antigen) and an internal helical nucleoprotein (S antigen) containing single-strand negative sense RNA. Antigenic differences between isolates do not appear to have epidemiological significance.
