Abstract
H.pylori is a small, curved, microaerophilic Gramnegative bacillus which is highly motile by means of numerous polar sheathed flagellae. Although first identified in man in 1982, it is already well established that this organism is responsible for the majority of peptic ulcer disease. In addition there is increasing evidence that chronic gastritis and gastric cancer may also be associated with infection by this organism. More recently it has also been suggested that H.pylori may be involved in the pathogenesis of certain types of gastric MALT lymphomas, and possibly even of coronary artery disease in some individuals. The organism has a world-wide distribution, although rates of infection appear higher in poorer socio-economic conditions.
