The Ionized Gas in Early-Type Galaxies

Abstract

Optical surveys have shown that a large percentage of early-type galaxies contain extended dust lanes, patches or a central disk-like dust structure (Sadler & Gerhardt 1985; Sparks et al. 1985; Macchetto & Sparks 1992; Goudfrooij et al. 1994). In addition to the dust, warm (104K) ionized gas is present in a high fraction of ellipticals, of the order of 50%, as shown by spectroscopic and/or imaging surveys. Although relatively small in mass, 103–104 solar masses, the contribution to the energy budget of the galaxy can be very large. The optical line-emission can dominate the energy loss from X-rays and therefore it has to be understood in order to derive a correct description for the energetics of the interstellar medium in these galaxies.
