Abstract

The damage suffered by steel structures in a recent strong earthquake forced the profession to reevaluate issues related to the seismic design of steel structures. Moment-resisting steel frames or parts of a frame are being tested to study their behavior during an earthquake. In a recently published report, SAC (1995) pointed out that it is not possible to generalize observations from limited experimental results since experiments may not represent inplace conditions, it is not economically feasible to test commonly used structural members and connection details, and the uncertainty in the problem can not be considered in limited experiments. Mathematical models verified by experimental results are necessary for this purpose.
