Abstract

The area round Chernobyl was as early as 1960 used for radioecological studies on forests. Therefore, in 1986 there existed a fair knowledge of the ecological conditions of the forests in the 30 km zone. It was already noticed that the forests formed an effective natural filter capable of absorbing dust and aerosols due to the large area of their foliage. It was shown that from aerial radioactive contamination, forests capture up to 40–90% of the radioactivity in their crown [1] [2] [3].
