Mapping plant biodiversity on Mount Cameroon

Abstract

The Gulf of Guinea is believed to have been one of the two major Pleistocene refugia in Africa. Mount Cameroon lies towards the centre of this area and is one of Africa’s centres of plant diversity. At least 50 species and 3 genera are strictly endemic and 50 more species near endemic, to the main massif and the foothills Large areas of indigenous forest occur on the slopes, and the mountain, West Africa’s tallest at 4,000 m, is unusual in having natural vegetation extending from sea-level at the coast to the sub-alpine grassland at the top. An active volcano, the mountain’s soils are extremely fertile and the surviving forest is under some pressure from logging and farming. Since 1992, a series of botanical inventories have been carried out of the mountain’s forests. Approaching 10,000 specimen numbers have been gathered in the course of these inventories and this paper sets out the progress made in analyzing the data.

Résumé

Il semble que le Golfe de Guinée ait été l’un des deux refuges principaux du Pléistocène en Afrique. Le Mont Cameroun se situe à peu près au centre de cette région et constitue l’un des centres de diversité végétale de l’Afrique. Au moins 50 espèces et 3 genres sont strictement endémiques et 50 autres espèces subendémiques du massif principal et des piedmonts. De grandes étendues de forêt naturelle occupent les pentes; la montagne, la plus haute de l’Afrique occidentale avec ses 4000 m d’altitude, est tout à fait remarquable du fait que sa végétation naturelle s’étale depuis le niveau de la mer jusqu’aux formations herbeuses subalpines du sommet. C’est un volcan actif, les sols de la montagne sont extrêmement fertiles et la forêt qui subsiste est plus ou moins menacée par l’exploitation du bois et l’agriculture. Depuis 1992, une série d’inventaires botaniques des forêts de cette montagne ont été effectués. Environ 10.000 échantillons ont été récoltés au cours de ces inventaires et cet article rend compte des progrès réalisés dans l’analyse des données.
