Abstract

The improved positions of compact high energy sources provided by the new X-ray and gamma-ray space observatories allowed the discovery at radio wavelengths of several sources of relativistic outflows in the Galaxy. in addition to the classic stellar jet source SS433 (Margon, 1984), two new jet sources that exhibit apparent superluminal motions were identified. Although it is commonly believed that in these accretion-power X-ray sources the acceleration and collimation of the ejecta is magnetohydrodynamic, a number of observational and theoretical questions on the nature of these “microquasars” remain open. Here we will review the observational properties of the superluminal sources GRS 1915+105 (Mirabel & Rodríguez, 1994) and GRO J1655–40 (Hjellming & Rupen, 1995; Tingay et al. 1995) and will compare them with other known sources of relativistic jets in the Galaxy. The aspects of these phenomena that are specifically relevant for relativistic astrophysics were previously discussed by Mirabel & Rodriguez (1995).
