Abstract

The uses of radicals in organic synthesis have increased enormously within the last decade and now they span all the areas of organic chemistry. For example, at the beginning of the 1980’s the application in natural product total synthesis was limited to a few functional group transformations and now hundreds of sophisticated applications exist [1]. The majority of radical reactions of interest to synthetic chemists are chain processes and generally they take place under reducing conditions [2]. In this article, we will deal with some recent applications of free radical chain reactions to organic synthesis and provide information for the design of new radical-based synthetic reactions.
