Abstract

Inspired by the basic ideas of string theory, we have recently started the investigation of a cosmological scenario in which the standard big-bang singularity is smoothed out and is replaced by a phase of maximal (finite) curvature. Such a phase is preceeded in time by a “pre-big-bang” epoch [1-3], which has (approximately) specular properties with respect to the present phase of standard decelerated evolution.
