Abstract
Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) are among the most primitive of organisms, having an evolutionary history spanning some four billion years. These procaryotic, photosynthetic microorganisms, which have the morphology and physiology of both bacteria and plants, are ubiquitous and adaptive to a wide variety of environments, including hot springs and polar ice caps. Although the most conspicuous species are found in freshwater and terrestrial habitats, it is estimated that the total number of autonomous marine species is more than double that of strictly terrestrial ones.
