Abstract
It gives me the greatest pleasure to welcome you all to the Eighth International C1 Symposium. These symposia have so far always been held at some location in the world where there is a centre of excellence in the study of microbial growth on C1 compounds. The emphasis has been on the proximity to the research centre rather than to some exotic island paradise. But in 1995 these separate academic and sybaritic strands have been neatly ligated here in San Diego because, besides being on a world famous stretch of the Pacific Ocean, it is close to Pasadena and Caltech where Mary Lidstrom has since 1987 led an illustrious C1 research group.
