Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present some of the results obtained in a Ph.D. project that the author finished in June 1994, see Lund (1994a). A general description of the structural optimization system ODESSY and its facilities for structural analysis and design sensitivity analysis is given. Different approaches of deriving expressions of design sensitivity analysis are discussed and the direct differentiation approach is chosen. An improved method for semi-analytical sensitivity analysis based on “exact” numerical differentiation of element matrices using first order forward finite differences has been developed and will be outlined. Finally, a general and flexible way of formulating problems of mathematical programming in structural design optimization systems is presented.
