Abstract

Queries for database retrieval and data in the real world have fuzziness which cannot or need not be precisely defined. In order to deal with them we have two research fields of fuzzy database systems and fuzzy information retrieval. They have different histories and methodologies. In this paper we survey works on fuzzy database systems in the view of fuzzy query processing and fuzzy data model as well as those in fuzzy information retrieval. Moreover we discuss models of fuzzy database systems and those for fuzzy information retrieval, comparing characteristics of the models.
