Abstract

While preparing an introduction to bioethics for a group of clinicians, I discovered an intriguing document in the files of my hospital’s bioethics committee. It was an unpublished, unsigned article entitled, “The History of Ethics”. Amazingly enough this historical survey was contained in one page! A scan of its contents provided a distressing explanation for its brevity. The “history of ethics” had been reduced to a series of U.S. court cases and medical dilemmas beginning shortly after World War II. The cases were described in the language of medical analysis and legal outcome.
