An Introduction to Group Decision Making and Group Decision-Support Systems

  • Chapter
Computer Aided Decision Support in Telecommunications

Part of the book series: BT Telecommunications Series ((BTTS,volume 8))

Abstract

Literature on group decision making (GDM) makes frequent reference to the growing need for systems which support groups of people making decisions as opposed to systems which support individuals in making decisions alone — ‘the lonely decision maker striding down the hall … to make a decision is true only for minor decisions. In most organizations … most major decisions are made collectively’ [1]. This is certainly borne out by a survey of decision making in BT carried out in April 1992, which revealed that approximately 70% of respondents feel they make decisions in groups rather than individually [2]. The survey also highlighted that certain types of decisions were usually addressed in groups (e.g. project management, marketing, software development), whilst others were usually addressed alone (e.g. personnel, finance).
