Abstract
Computer aided decision support is of increasing significance to business at all levels. The effective exploitation of computer technology in the decision-making process is no longer the preserve of specialists, but a matter of corporate survival in a world of competition. Computer aided decision support draws upon recent advances in the fields of computing, management science, operational research, information management, and the psychology of human/computer interaction. Undoubtedly the greatest impetus has come from the availability of powerful low-cost personal computers (PCs). The resultant development of low-cost decision-support tools, such as the ubiquitous spreadsheet, together with the increasing availability of local and wide area communications networks has accelerated the penetration of the technology. All of this has led to an immense amount of information being brought to the desktop, allowing advanced computer aided support to be provided to decision makers.
