Abstract
Rotary tube calciners using metallic or oxide ceramic tubes are well suited for a number of operations in which processing temperatures are typically below 1923K (1650°C). These include applications such as the removal of chemically bound water from precursor oxides (e.g. boric acid to B2O3), the carbonization of organic species such as binders which are contained in ceramic precursor formulations, the removal of excess carbon from carbothermally produced non-oxide powders (Chapter 19), the removal of NH3 from diimide intermediates to produce amorphous Si3N4(a) (Chapter 15), and the crystallization of amorphous powders (e.g. Si3N4(a) to α-Si3N4; Chapter 15).
