Abstract
Genes for potassium transport and water transport were studied in a facultative halophyte, ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), and in barley. A gene encoding K+ channel protein (low affinity potassium transport) was detected in ice plant. Salt stress slightly reduced its expression. Gene(s) of K+ channels and gene(s) encoding proteins for high affinity K+ transport are under investigation in both ice plant and barley. MIP (membrane intrinsic protein) genes in ice plant were detected as salt stress-regulated genes, and expression assay showed MIP encoded protein of the water channel. In barley, gene fragments encoding putative plasma membrane-type water channel were identified.
