Abstract

The quality of any ecological cartographic inventory of vegetation is based for the most part on the choice of the classification and vegetation analysis methods used. Moreover, at the very beginning of the BIOTROP-ICIV ‘South-East Asian Vegetation Mapping’ Project for which Sumatra was the test zone, it appeared quickly that many classic concepts linked to vegetation analysis used in the region were not well suited for such an equatorial, biologically rich environment (Blasco et al. 1983).
