Abstract
Misrepresentation and dishonest coverage about Africa in western media has become a widespread norm. Images, by and large, depict unhealthy children, ethnic conflict and more recently, piracy and terrorism. Rarely do we witness images depicting the reality of progression and freedom enjoyed in many parts of the continent. Rarely do we witness images of Africans helping Africans. Through an anti-racist discursive framework, this chapter will explore western media misrepresentations of Somalia and its complicity in advancing the colonial project, the silencing of Somali voices and its implications on the Somali people and the diasporic role in creating counter narratives. This chapter will emphasize the continuing efforts of Somali youth and non-profit groups to create stories from the Somali perspective and create fresh narratives based in Somali solutions.
