Abstract
This chapter will outline an approach for starting a faculty development program, whether it is initiating a single hospital department-based program addressing a focused faculty development issue, building a program in a hospital, specialty society or college, or starting a program that is faculty-wide, national or international. Guided by change theory and other theoretical approaches and related models, we will describe the steps and processes required to create a faculty development program. Core start-up issues, such as forming a planning committee, conducting an environmental scan and needs assessment, describing the purpose, goals and objectives of the program, and establishing a curriculum, will be explored in detail, as will delivery methods, evaluation strategies, and ways to build a program of scholarship, ensure sustainability, secure infrastructure funding and staffing, and market the program.
