Abstract
Social scientists are fond of theorizing about the world’s biggest problems such as climate change, world hunger, and chronic illnesses. The people in this volume’s case studies are not theorizing; they are all in the trenches making things happen for people who have been given very little opportunity in life. These are stories about people with significant moral imagination, willing to put aside old assumptions, engrained mental models, and not just envision a better world; but also make it happen. Moral imagination involves understanding the context of a situation, looking beyond one’s preconceived biases and assumptions, imagining and carefully evaluating new possibilities, and then acting. These cases demonstrate that adaptability, courage, and determination are also important ingredients for creating change.
