Abstract
This paper gives a review of UKIRT’s major contributions to our understanding of the interstellar medium. I focus on the studies of several phenomena in which UKIRT has made particularly key contributions. These are (1) the physics of shock waves, (2) fluorescent molecular hydrogen, (3) grain mantles in dense clouds, (4) hydrocarbons in diffuse clouds, and (5) properties of dense and diffuse clouds revealed by H3 +.
