Abstract

This chapter begins by presenting the collections of information, statistical data and standard classifications available in the databases of the European Commission and Eurostat. It then provides an overview of a number of well-documented surveys conducted under the auspices of EU agencies. This is followed by a description of the main official statistics and academic databases and data sources. Some collect census instruments and/or data; others have specialised in specific variables; still others process national official statistics for use in academically driven research and make them available to social researchers. The chapter concludes with the presentation of four major European and international social surveys and a network of European social science data archives.
