Abstract
Researchers have assessed the relations between personality traits, their facets, and levels of alexithymia. In general, studies suggest that personality, including the Big Five personality traits, is associated with alexithymia. Using personality inventories such as the NEO-PI (and NEO-PI-R), research generally reports a positive correlation between alexithymia and neuroticism. Negative correlations are consistently reported between alexithymia and extraversion and openness to experience. Research has not shown consistently strong relations between alexithymia and agreeableness or conscientiousness.
