Abstract

Synapsids play a prominent role in research on the end-Permian mass extinction. The majority of data on the effects and severity of this extinction in the terrestrial realm is derived from the fossil record of the Russian fore-Urals and the South African Karoo Basin. A new locality preserving an important Permo-Triassic boundary layer from the Karoo, Nooitgedacht 68, is introduced. Additionally, a study of the relationship between exposed rock outcrop in the Karoo Basin and synapsid diversity is introduced.
