Abstract
This chapter examines the nature of demographic information in a more specific and detailed way; and gives concepts and definitions. It describes various methods of collection of demographic data. This includes features, content and organisation of modern censuses, the use of sampling associated with the collection of detailed population characteristics; as well as the evaluation of the quality of the data collected in the census. The methodology and process of sample surveys are reviewed. The chapter examines the registration of vital events such as births, deaths, marriages and divorces. The completeness of these registration practices is also considered. Features of population registers in some European countries such as Finland and Sweden are also discussed. In addition, the usefulness of administrative records and their shortcomings are reviewed. The chapter also points to some useful sources of demographic data from international agencies.
