Histopathological Alterations of the Mantle of Mytilus galloprovincialis from the Ria of Vigo (NW Spain): Effect of Persistent Chemicals?

Abstract

The present study describes the occurrence of neoplastic disorders in the gonad (mantle tissue) of Mytilus galloprovincialis in relation to persistent chemicals accumulation. Germinal cells are the main cellular type affected by these neoplastic alterations. The neoplastic prevalence was 18 %, being higher in males (62.5 %) than in females (37.5 %), with a higher incidence during periods of active gametogenesis. Persistent environmental pollutants such as PAHs, organochlorine compounds (PCBs and OCPs) and trace elements were also analyzed in mussel samples. A high correlation between neoplastic prevalence and PAH’s of high molecular weight, dioxin-like PCB’s, Cd and Zn was observed. Multivariate analysis suggests possible synergic effects between these mutagenic species in the promotion and progress of described neoplastic disorders, as well as their lethal effect of high accumulated concentrations.
