Abstract

NOCIRC of Northern Ireland has had a preliminary meeting with counselors and psychiatrists on the known emotional effects of male circumcision, particularly in relation to adolescent suicide attempts, and is currently developing a training program in this area. Neonatal circumcision is not the norm in Northern Ireland where the majority of children are not circumcised after birth. There were 244 male children circumcised between birth and 18 years of age in 2008/2009, with the majority diagnosed as requiring circumcision due to phimosis and urinary tract infections. We have anecdotal evidence that female children may also be at risk locally because, despite legislation, it has been estimated by Forward that 15,000 female children in the United Kingdom are at risk annually.
